Register for the 2024 Africa, Law & [Emerging] Technologies Policy Hackathon Challenge

The Data Science Law Lab will be hosting the first edition of the Africa, Law & [Emerging] Technologies Policy Hackathon in collaboration with the Data Science for Social Impact research group (University of Pretoria). The Centre for Child Law and the Expression, Information and Digital Rights Unit, Centre for Human Rights (both at the University of Pretoria) as well as the South African National Bioinformatics Institute (University of the Western Cape) are providing collaboration and support as Challenge Partners.

This year’s hackathon is on the subject of data privacy and will take place in hybrid format (Pretoria and online) in July 2024 (date to be announced), with cash and other prizes up for grabs for the winning teams.

We are utilising the policy hackathon to brainstorm, develop, prototype and pitch creative policy solutions that addresses the intersection between law and data (access, use, reuse and management) in various fields of AI and data science applications (health, culture and languages, climate, etc.) in South Africa. This aspect of the data, law and society in South Africa combination is promoted by a solution-creation process in generating ideas that enhance or indicate best approaches to implementing statutory requirements (e.g., in privacy and data protection laws, etc.) taking into account the interests and contexts of local stakeholders in South Africa as active, passive and/or consuming participants in AI development and governance.

We are inviting all registered Masters and doctoral level postgraduate students in a South African university, who are interested in data privacy issues especially relating to data sharing in public health during routine and emergency situations in South Africa and children and young persons’ right to privacy on digital platforms to register by 30 April 2024 and take part in this great opportunity. All disciplines are welcome!
